After several challenging holes, Las Sendas Golf Club’s eighteenth hole represents a birdie opportunity—despite its double dogleg design and proximity to water. This par five “strategy hole” plays between 581 yards (silver tees) and 410 yards (copper tees).
Tee Shot: Risk & Reward
Most golfers try landing their tee shots to the left of the first pond and short of the larger pond ahead. However, going too far left leaves a longer second shot (and more water to hit over).
Inching toward the right side of the fairway makes hole eighteen play much shorter, but finding water off the tee isn’t a great way to end your round.
Planning Your Approach
Longer hitters might try going over the larger pond, attempting to reach the green in two strokes and set up an eagle putt. Adding a ½ club’s distance to your shot is wise, as the hole plays a bit longer than expected.
Many golfers opt for the “safer” approach by following the fairway and laying up, which leaves a short iron or wedge shot for your third. Unfortunately, this option poses its own challenges. For starters, the lay up area sits on a slope and presents a difficult angle to the green. There’s also a large bunker to contend with.
A Green That’s Very Close to Water
Hole eighteen’s green is less than 10 yards from the pond, so missing short isn’t really an option. The green’s left and right sides are guarded by bunkers, and beyond the green you’ll find an out of bounds area near the parking lot. The green itself drops off on the right side and features a “spine” that runs toward the back.
